Take six pieces of yarn together. Put hook through loop on the tip of the earflap, from the inside out. Pull a loop of the yarns through, and pull the tail end through the loop. Round 2: Ch 4, skip one sc, sl st in next sc.  Repeat around, finishing in base of original ch 4.

Sew flowers together with petals staggered.

Leave ends free to tie on to hat.  Weave in or leave strings tied in a bow so you can switch it out with something else.

  5. I am knew to crochet so I am still learning how to read patterns. This pattern is adorable so I started and automatically got lost when I read (Magic Ring, ch 3. 12 dc. Join to the top ch of ch 3.) I mastered the Magic Ring and the 12 dc but join where? What is ch 3? chain 3...Please help! :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. you chain 3 first, then you double crochet in the maic ring 12 times, after that you're going to join to the top of ch 3. When i firs started crocheting it helped me to put a bobby pin in the stitch i was going to join. Hope this helps. you can also find youtube videos that will teach you how to crochet if you are more of a visual person.

  6. Make sure you know how to use the magic ring by clicking on the link. Inside your magic ring, you ch 3 before your first dc. When you've done all 12 dcs, join to the last ch you made (it's at the top, next to the loops where you will build on your dcs).

  12. loved the hats. but when i printed the patterns the dark bluebackground made it all but impossible to read. anyway you could ditch the dark background and repost for printing. i have two new grandbabies coming in the fall, would love to make for them. thks lucinda

    ReplyDelete
  13. Lucinda, on my computer the background looks light blue. You could try to copy and paste the pattern to a document and print it that way. Sorry it's not working for you! If you can't get it to work, email allicraftsblog@gmail.com and I'll send you a copy of it with a white background. Congratulations on the grandbabies!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Hi Alli, Does this sound about right, i made this hat and ended up being 5 inches tall and 6 inches across while lying flat?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Copying these instructions and pasting onto a document works great. I love this hat! I have been looking for this type of hat to buy all winter for my grandbabies. Now I can make as many as i want.
One dumb question, "Do I always chain 3 when I start a new row of double crochet?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Thanks for pointing that out! I forgot to put the "ch 3"s in the main hat pattern. You do ch 3 at the start of every row. So glad it's working out for you!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Thankyou so much for this pattern... I have made one... I had to use a larger hook but it worked out great...I am making a few to sell at my friends craft day to raise money for breast cancer....I will put your blog address on the tags ..

  18. I absolutely love your patterns! Thank you so much for posting them. I have been so busy making all sorts of hats, stork pouches you name it. Love them! But I am curious mine seem to be small and I worry they wont fit a newborn....I follow the patterns, right guage, etc.....what could I be doing wrong?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Elizabeth,
I do tend to crochet loosely, but as long as your finished product meets the dimensions specified in the pattern (or for the newborn hats, 12" in diameter, at least 4.5" in length) then it should be fine. To make it the right size, you can use a bigger hook, thicker yarn, or add an extra row of increases or additional rows on the end.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Alli,
Thanks so much! Measurements meet perfectly I think that I am over thinking them :) I cant wait to post a link so you can see what I have done. Thanks so much for posting such amazing patterns!

  21. This is so stinkin' cute! I found you via your Tangled Happy feature and am so glad I did. I just made one in a deep purple with an orange flower for a little girl due this fall. I love all of your finish-in-one-sitting projects -- those are my favorites! And this pattern FINALLY forced me to learn the magic ring. Yay me!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Alli, I just made this hat, without the ear flaps because the hat seems to be four inches across, and I heard that an average newborn has a 14" circumference head. Also, I ended up with an awfully prominent twisted seam? Any ideas on how to fix this?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I LOVE this pattern! I made 2 of these, for my daughter, in 1 day I loved it so much! Thank you so much for sharing!!! I would love to show pictures but don't seem to know how.

    ReplyDelete
  24. You do amazing work, I was wondering if I could possibly use 2 strings of silk yarn. All I have on had is soft yarn and I am in a desire need to make something. I bet others get that feeling. I would LOVE to make this. Would there be any changes. thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  25. aleeouway, you probably could! Just make sure that, after your final increase round, the circumference is 12". If not, keep increasing until it's the right size. Then add rows until it's about 5 inches from top to bottom. And I totally understan - I get that desire, too! :)

  26. Thank you soooo much for the quick reply. I am going to start it now. thanks again!

  30. Thank you for sharing this pattern. I just found out my son's physical therapist is having a boy. I had so much fun making this for her to have when her baby boy gets here in December. 31. I am new to crochet and I have no one to teach me but I would LOVE to learn to make hats. The problem that I am running in to is the very beginning... I cannot for the life of me figure out how to exactly start the project after the magic ring. Are we supposed to follow the magic ring directions completely then start on your instructions for round 1? What I'm getting confused with is where you instruct to chain 3.If I make my loop for the magic ring and then chain 3 and then begin my dc through the loop, instead of leaving a hole in the middle, the spot where my chain 3 started has a hole. ? I guess I'm not completely understanding everything correctly. Could you possibily explain it with a bit more detail or is there a video that you could reccomend that could help me?

    ReplyDelete
  32. I started making this hat and it was way to small. How could I fix that?

    Thanks!

  33. I'm absolutely in love with your blog now. I couldn't believe how fast and easy this has was to make. I used a khaki and sea green (as the edging) to make this adorable hat. I can't wait to bring my little one home from the hospital in it around New Year's!

  34. I just finished this hat in camouflage for my soon to be great-great nephew. I love your pattern, it was so easy to follow and was so much fun to make. I foresee me making many of these for gifts and for charity. Once again. Thank you for such a wonderful pattern. Goldie Pel

I feel so fortunate to have found this site! So many great ideas, I don't know where to start! Your flowers for the hats are wonderful. I was wondering, do you have a shamrock pattern that you use or could point me to an area with one I could try? I have a niece due on St Paddys, and as we are Irish, I would like to modify this hat to have a shamrock on it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a bunch!

  38. Hi Alli
My niece is having her first in the Spring and this is just the sweetest hat I have seen--you know, we aunts don't want to give just any ol' hat! Thanks so much for sharing!! The picture with the crown is darling too!!!! If we have a girl, she'll get that!!

  39. Hi! I'm trying out this pattern atm, but as with most other hat patterns I try i get a gap in my seam. I'm sure it's me doing it wrong so I usually end up tweaking the patterns, but I would really like to learn to do it right.
What I mean by gap is that when I'm at the end of a round and i have the correct amount of stitches, there is like a empty stitch where i joined the previous round that i sort of have to skip when i join to top of chain 3.
Do you count first chain 3 as a DC? And in that case, do you start each round with chain 3 and one DC in top of chain 3?
Sorry if this doesn't make any sense, I'm just confused as I seem to get the same problem with every pattern i try.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I took some pictures to clarify, maybe someone can tell me what i'm doing wrong?
Hope I'm not being annoying, I just want some help. =)

  41. Emmy, I had quite a bit of trouble with that when I first started making hats. I have landed on not counting the ch 3 as a dc, and being ok with a visible seam. As long as you make your chains small, the seam doesn't even always show. When you finish your correct amount of stitches, join with a slip stitch to the third (top) ch of the ch 3. Then ch 3 from there. So you have this ch 3 line going up the back of the hat that sorta blends in with the dcs, but if you know what you are looking at, it is distinct. Most people don't even notice it, in my experience.
I am not sure if I am seeing correctly, but it doesn't look like you're joining with a slip stitch to me... it should just be one little loop. So, last dc, slip stitch, ch 3, start dcs in next round. You can see an example of my seam next to the earflap on the left in the 3-month size pattern. Hope that helps!
    Alli

  43. Love love love this pattern,it's hard to find patterns that can be used for baby boys. I made this for a baby boy due anytime now, I made some booties to go with it. I used Bernat Baby sport, in blue, its so soft and the pattern was perfect. I'm going to make one for my grandson. Thanks so much for sharing! Trystins Nana

  44. Hi Alli! I used this pattern and added some embellishment to make a penguin hat for a friend's newborn baby boy. Now his big sister (she's about 3) is insisting I make one for her as well. How would you recommend altering this pattern for a larger circumference? I was thinking of repeating the increasing rows (2, 3, and 4). Do you think this will work?

    ReplyDelete
  45. thanks so much for the input! i did experiment some and it turned out really cute, even if the seam is still visible. thanks!

  46. RaeAnn,
Check out the Size Information link at the top of the blog, that will tell you how. The hat sounds adorable! All the best,

  47. Do you have a pattern like this in an adult size? I made one for my daughter and would love to have a matching one:)

    ReplyDelete
  48. I love this hat!! I am making the flowers right now and am stuck at Round 3. I just dont get it!! Can you explain it a little more? Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  49. You have six skinny loops, and you need to make them fatter. So you will do six or four, depending on which flower, single crochets in each loop. You don't slip stitch at all in the round, you just keep doing single crochets. But when you have done six inside the first loop, just move on to the second loop and do the six inside of that loop. Instead of putting your hook into a stitch, you just put your hook inside the large loop. Hope that helps, Melissa!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Oooh, I was trying to put my hook inside each stitch. However, the pattern says 8 sc in each loop... is it only supposed to be 6? Thanks again!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Thank you so much for this pattern! I made it last night using two threads (one blue and one variegated blue/white/green and then a white for the trim). I love how it turned out! I'm afraid it might be a bit big. Can you help me understand if I measured correctly?...I followed your pattern exactly, with no extra increase rows. So If I understand, I should measure around after row 4, so actually measuring row 5 to see if it is about 12"? Is that correct?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Using different materials will change the size of the hat, so definitely measure. After round 5 is a good place to see if you are on track to be at around 11 or 12 inches.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I have ripped this out 3 times, When I finish a row I join at top of chain 3, I then crochet 3 then start the double crochet. Where I join each row and chain 3 I am winding up with a gap not sure why, please help

    ReplyDelete
  54. Laurie, There is going to be a gap, because a chain is not connected like a dc. If you are chaining tightly, the gap will not be noticeable when you finish the hat.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Thanks I will keep going.

  56. Love all your patterns. Do you have one for crocheted ugg boots for an infant?

  57. Thank you for this incredibly cute and fast pattern. I just made it for my nephew, leaving off the flower & braids and sewing a teddy bear patch on the front. Also, I embarrassed to say after 8 years of crocheting I had not conquered the magic ring until your tutorial. Yay I feel so accomplished. Thanks again for sharing your fabulousness!

  58. Holy mackerel. This is the first newborn hat I've done that actually looks like, you know, a hat at the end. The magic ring made all the difference, and the pattern was worded perfectly. I did this sucker in an hour, and that's with kids hanging off of me. Huzzah!

Thank you so much for sharing these absolutely ADORABLE tiny hats. It is going to take me longer to decide which pattern to make than to crochet it up! We are having new little one in March and as soon as we find out whether baby is niece or nephew I can choose. I make all my baby hats with cashmere so it will be extra sweet and soft.

  63. I noticed in the smaller sizes you had 2 rows of sc in the earflaps, but in the larger sizes there is only 1 row. Is that the way it is supposed to be ?

  64. It's just what I did... in the bigger sizes I thought it looked better. Earflaps are not much work... I'd try it both ways and see which you like better.

  67. I'm semi new to crocheting hats I've always just done blankets...I'm having one heck of a time getting the gauge right. I'm just using the redheart walmart brand yarn is that worsted weight yarn? I've even used different size needles and I can't seem to get the correct size. I guess ill just keep working at it and see what I come up with any tips as to why its too large?

    ReplyDelete
  68. You might crochet like me...all mine came out too big too. I used the pattern she provided that was one size down. I made the toddler size, and added one extra row at the bottom and one extra row of 12 sc in the ear flaps and it fits my head perfectly.

  78. Cute pattern! Im not sure i understand how you attach the strands for braiding.
It says cut 12, then add a group of 6? Do i do this twice then, as you need 12 to braid?
Or do you mean add 6 to each side, doubling them in half with an overhand knot sort of (pull the middle through as a loop and then pull the ends through)?

    ReplyDelete
  79. Thank you so much for sharing. ~ Brenda

    ReplyDelete
  80. When you attach 6 strands in the way described, you will have 12 pieces to braid.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Hey I am using a thicker yarn( Lion Brand Baby's First 5 bulky) it requires a 6.50mm hook, how would I accommodate this pattern? Should I still use the 5mm hook or would it be fine with using the bigger hook?

    ReplyDelete
  82. Enjoyed making the hat but can not figure out how to attach the braids to the hat. Do i use 12 on each side.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Nope, 6. You fold the 6 pieces in half to make a loop, which you pull through the tip of the hat with your hook. Then you secure them by pulling them through the loop. That leaves you with 12 (since the 6 are doubled over).

  84. Alli, Thanks for this pattern. I was at a craft fair today and saw a few hats simular to this, but the cheapest one was $20.00! I knew I could find a pattern and make it myself. 2 hours later, I have one exactly like I wanted. Thanks again.

  85. What size would best fit a 12 to 18 month old?

  86. As you can see in the size information tab, the difference between the 9-12 Mont size and the toddler size is only a couple of inches, so I'd say if the kiddo has a bigger head, then the toddler, but if a smaller head then the 9-12 month one. Girls tend to have smaller heads than boys. The purple hat I made for my girl when she was 10 months old (in the pictures) still fits her this year now that she's 2.

  87. I absolutely love this! I was able to work up the hat very quickly in a chocolate brown cotton. But I do have a couple questions on the earflaps... I was the person that coudn't attach the yarn on the football hat, and still having trouble with that. Would it work to just tie it around the 7th stitch from the seam, and stick my hook through? I just can't figure it out... also, when you go 7 stitches for the next earflap, do you count the ch 3 space as a stitch, and when you attach it in the 7th stitch, does your first sc take place in that stitch, or do you start them in the 8th? Sorry that's so much! Hope I won't have as many as with the football hat. :)

  88. Try tying it on, that will probably work for you better. If you are doing a round of scs after, the knot would be covered up. And it really doesn't matter if you count the ch-3 sp or not. I usually don't count it as a dc in any of my stitch counts, but with the earflaps, I only included a count to give a general idea. You can just eyeball it - ears are slightly behind center on the head.

    1. Great! When I start my row of single crochets, does the first one go in that approx. 7th stitch, or the next one after I've tied it on, the 8th? Thanks much!

    2. Sorry, I didn't really make that sound like a question...:) So where does that first sc in the row go? Stitch 7, where you joined, or the next one after joining, the 8th? Just let me know!

    3. It doesn't matter. I would probably tie it on and do a ch, go to the next one for the first sc, then when you get back around, join with a sl st to the ch and finish off.

    4. I don't mean to sound too blunt, but why do you do the crab stitch? I'm left handed, so do I pretty much just sc right handed? Thanks again! I so appreciate your help!

    5. Okay, so I just figured out how to attach yarn! So with that comes one new question that I guess I already asked, but this time it seems different... so when you attach in stitch #7, where do you want sc #1 to go? In stitch #7, or #8, the next one in line? If you could reply about both my comments that would be great, but if you can only answer one, that would be fine too. :)

    6. Crab stitch - I just do it because it looks cool. You have to do it super loose, though, or the hat will be too tight. If you want, you can just do single crochets instead - it's way easier. The link to the crab stitch tutorial shows how to do it left handed if you mouse over the pictures.
The other question - it's still the same answer. It doesn't matter, it will look a little tighter if you do it in the same stitch, but either way it will turn out just fine.

  90. Likewise...I just made this little hat for my sisters baby shower on Saturday and it turned out so cute. Thanks for posting it. I too really liked the crab stitch edging. It was my first time using it. Blessings to you Alli.

Oh question...if I made these to sell is that ok?

    Thanks again.

  93. Didn't read all the questions/comments but wondering what the gauge is on this?? And measurements? Like crown to brim and also side to side when laying flat? Also I have to use a size 5 yarn (as I was looking for a particular color and that is the ONLY yarn I could find)Hoping to have a hat fit 0-3 months thinking if I make in newborn size it should work?
Thanks for your help - Darcy

  94. Hi Alli, I have a niece in-law (sister in-law's daughter)that is due pretty soon. I am going to attempt this with Homespun yarn, using the premie size since it will probably turn out bigger. I'm also going to add pig features. Since this is a copyright, you don't want the finished product sold, correct? My sister in-law wants to buy the finished hat from me. Unemployed and need the money.

Wish me luck. Thank you for sharing- Brenda

  95. Your hats are just so precious!! My friend just had her third baby last night, her first girl, I'm making her some of these hats in lots of fun girly colors. They go by so quickly when they are this small! I also think I can change up this pattern juuuuust enough so it will fit my small Maltese. Thank you so much for making them free!!

    1. Start the stitch but don't pull the yarn through to complete it, instead start another and finish both together, thus you have decreased while working in single crochet stitch in US terminology
